Risks and Contraindications

Massage is generally recommended for most people and many conditions for which massage is beneficial. However, there are certain health conditions that may be aggravated by or will respond negatively to massage and need to be avoided. These are called contraindications. Local contraindications are specific areas that should be avoided during a massage. A condition in which massage should be avoided altogether because the entire body is involved and massage might potentially spread the disease or worsen the situation is called systemic contraindication. In addition, there are conditions where a doctor's approval is required before any treatment can begin. It is also very important to take medications into massage considerations - type, side effects, dosage, timing, and intake methods. A complete and thorough review of Client Intake and Health Update forms are key to addressing these possible risks.

*** Massage should not be considered as a replacement for professional medical treatment: a physician should be consulted in all matters relating to health and especially in relation to any symptoms that may require diagnosis or medical attention.
